In Korea, a law once required part of the budget for large buildings to be spent on public sculptures. Many of these sculptures now sit neglected, out of place in people’s lives. They feel like useless garnishes added to a dish for decoration. I thought about the loneliness of these forgotten sculptures.

I recreated graffiti from a pedestrian bridge in Hannam-dong, Seoul, on a window. Graffiti
on architectural structures often looks more like abstract paintings than text. I see graffiti and stains as natural traces accumulated in the city over time. This work aimed to capture the beauty of these temporary layers.

Stained Memories
2022
tiles, cement, plasticfoam
65x100x45 cm

I wanted to create something inspired by scenes from the city. I thought about railings on buildings constructed during the 1960s-70s. Looking at old tiles sometimes makes me want to clean them, imagining their original state when they were new. The stains, as traces of time, can feel dirty but also evoke a sense of melancholy and beauty.

I was fascinated by the demolition of a building I passed by. Watching the plaster walls
break gave a satisfying feeling, but seeing the carefully built structure collapse left a sense
of emptiness. I couldn’t stop thinking about the bent rebar revealed in the process. I used fragile acrylic to create transparent structures that feel unstable, as if they could break at
any moment.
