In Korea, the shamanic ceremonial knife, Shinjancal, is often made from plastic or inexpensive materials. I found it intriguing that a tool used in sacred rituals is mass-produced in such a secular and ordinary way. I imagined what a future shaman’s Shinjancal.
Since traditional Korean artifacts lack the concept of a knife stand,
I wanted to reinterpret it in a new way. I drew inspiration from rice cooker cabinets commonly found in Korean mordern household and used their form to design the stand.
These works were exhibited in Chunky Totem Series (the 2nd solo show) at WWW Space, Seoul in 2021, and at Post-territory Ujeongguk in 2023.

Using discarded wooden furniture, metal cable ties, shower hoses, and other everyday materials found near my home, I spontaneously created a centipede-like form. The work was inspired by seonghwang tree, a sacred tree in Korean shamanic rituals, and its symbolic role. The role of the tree is to connect the sky and the earth. I drew from the image of various objects winding around a tree to shape the piece.

Two-faced dragon
2020
acrylic plate, metal parts
60x30x15 cm
This is a physical sculpture orginated from a film The Story of Two-Faced Dragon which I made same year. The ficional narrative was inspired by hero’s journey, where a hero is born on the day when the dragon opens its eyes. I considered the sculpture, existing within the exhibition space, to function as an artifact that substantiates the story.
This work debuted in a solo exhibition, SF Godmother of a Mountain (the 1st solo show)
at Osisun X Theatrebase, Seoul in 2020.
Poseokjeong
2020
acrylic fish bowl, jade ball, canister filter
189x90x100 cm
Poseokjeong is a historic waterway from the Ancient Korea period, designed for floating wine cups during gatherings. As a child, I saw a photo of it in my mother’s school trip album and felt an uncanny sense of disconnection. The image of an ancient relic, preserved in an old photograph, felt both distant and present. Inspired by this frozen yet continuous link to the past, I extruded
the heritage’s dimensions along the Z-axis to reinterpret its scale.

Imagining the attire of a Korean shaman from the future, I designed and sewed this garment myself. It was originally exhibited vacuum-sealed in an IKEA plastic bag in 2020, but later unpacked and presented for visitors to try on during the exhibition. The decorative elements of the outfit were inspired by a fictional story I created, titled The Chicken and the Centipede. By intentionally repeating the motifs of the chicken and centipede, I aimed to confuse viewers into wondering whether these symbols were drawn from real legends.
The piece was first shown at my solo exhibition at Osisun X Theatrebase in Seoul (2020) and later reconfigured for display at my solo exhibition at WWW Space, also in Seoul (2021).

Gitbal is a transliteration of the Korean word for "flag."
This piece was made by applying heat to acrylic sheets to transform their shape. It was created in the same context as my other acrylic-crafted ritual objects—such as guardian swords and bells—by imagining tools from a future era. While referencing the traditional shape of flags, I replaced fabric with plastic and decorated the fringe with metal cable ties. The flag was installed on a pole that connects the floor and ceiling of the exhibition space, resembling a flagpole.
It was exhibited in my solo show at WWW Space in Seoul (2021).
