Day & Night: Fountain&Hurricane is a collaborative work by Sulki Kim and Heejoo Keem, presented at the IBK Art Plaza Fair in November 2022.
Sulki and Heejoo each worked with a place they often find themselvesrecalling. Their individual works were then layered together to complete the final piece.
Sulki
I drew and created fountains. I tend to look at fountains more often in the summer.
A fountain exists to give people a refreshing feeling with its water streams against the summer heat.
Beyond that sensory joy, its simple and meager functionality felt sculpturally beautiful to me, along with a kind of existential purity.
I worked while thinking about the beauty of various sculptural forms of fountains.
Heejoo
This work is about cinema and the experience of going to the movies.
Faced with the task of loving independent art films, I ironically found myself completely blown away by blockbusters lately.
It features three movies I’ve seen recently that revolve, directly or indirectly, around life-threatening baptisms and attempts at salvation:
- When the Waves Are Gone (Lav Diaz, 2022)
- Nope (Jordan Peele, 2022)
- Close Encounters of the Third Kind (Steven Spielberg, 1977)
《Day & Night: Fountain&Hurricane》는 김슬기와 김희주의 협업 작품으로, 2022년 11월 IBK 아트 플라자 페어에서 갤러리 오브와의 협업으로 선보였습니다.
두 작가는 각자 자주 떠올려보는 장소에 대해 작업했으며,
그들의 개별 작업은 하나의 구성으로 겹쳐지고 층을 이루며 결합되었습니다.
김슬기는 분수에 대해 그리고 만들었습니다. 유독 여름에 분수를 더 자주 바라보게 됩니다.
분수는 물줄기로 사람들에게 청량함과 상쾌함을 선사하는 것이 목적입니다. 그 감각적 기쁨 외에 딱히 이렇다 할 게 없는 빈약한 기능성에서 조각적 아름다움(더불어 존재적 청순함)을 느꼈습니다.
다양한 형태의 분수의 아름다움에 대해 생각하며 작업했습니다.
김희주는 영화관, 영화라는 경험에 대해 작업했습니다.
독립예술영화를 사랑하라는 과제 앞에서 블록버스터영화에 너무 큰 감동을 받아버린 요즘입니다.
생명을 위협하는 세례와 구원의 시도에 관한 (최근에 본) 3개의 영화가 직간접적으로 등장합니다.
